On Thursday, November 3, 2022, The Gary Literacy Coalition will host its 2022 Dinner -Theater Fundraiser at the Dean and Barbara White Center. The mesmerizing stage play “Ghosting While Black” will entertain the audience. This drama is about an unheralded novelist that has been nominated for his first Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 1940, fame and fortune are threatened when his colored valet and ghostwriter demands credit. You can support this amazing literacy experience! This event is the primary fundraiser for GLC.
The Gary Literacy Coalition, founded by Dr. Steve Simpson in 2001, is a 501©3 not-for-profit organization that serves as the primary literacy collaborative in the Gary community. The city of Gary faces a serious literacy challenge with over 70% of its adult population (16 years and over) functioning at a low level of literacy. This situation handcuffs the progress of the community and results in a generational cycle of inadequate educational achievement. The side effects of low literacy on the community include loss of businesses and jobs, reduced tax revenues, chronic unemployment, rising health care costs, and soaring criminal activity. The mission of GLC is to support, promote, enhance, and coordinate the accessibility of literacy opportunities, thus making …Gary, “A Reading City.” A few of the accomplishments of GLC follow:
Succeeded in putting over 40,000 books annually into the homes of local low-income families.
Successfully operates Reach Out and Read, a pediatric early literacy program.
Supported over 60 partners during its existence.
Sponsors annual city-wide book events.
Organizes and distributes the annual “Summer Connections”… a guide to summer literacy opportunities.
Sponsors the “Learning Partners” Mentoring Project … supporting elementary school students.
Succeeds in putting books into the hands of every mother of a newborn at Methodist Hospitals.
GLC operates from grants and contributions. All GLC services are provided cost-free to those who need them. We need your financial support to continue our quest in helping citizens enjoy a better quality of life by improving their ability to read.
