GLC Volunteers

<p style="text-align:center;">GLC received a donation of “gently used” books from community partner Peoples Bank. The books were included in GLC’s annual Summer “Book Opp”.

Book Club Extravaganza<br/>

Book Club Extravaganza –This family literacy event promotes reading by encouraging the organization of book clubs in families, schools, churches, work places or anywhere three or more persons may choose. Existing book clubs from the community are spotlighted. Attendees have the opportunity to listen to “Book Byte” presentations giving them a glimpse of good books to read. Age appropriate books for young children, teens and adults are highlighted. Printed materials provide details on starting book clubs.  At the close of the event new and gently used books are made available for each participant to take home.

<p style="text-align:center;">In recognition of <strong><em>“Fire Safety Week” GLC donated “Fire Trucks: Trivia, Facts, and Fun”</em></strong> to the Gary Fire Department. The books will be distributed to children throughout the Gary community.</p>
<p style="text-align"center;">Beveridge “Reading Bookmarkers” is a reading initiative for third grade students at Beveridge Elementary School. </p>

<p style="text-align:center;">“Choices Matter” Retired school counselors share with students. The students lead the conversations.  Topics that are important to students are discussed.</p>

<p style="text-align:center;">Celebrating “Jumpstart Read for the Record” in October 2017<br/>
The Gary Literacy Coalition, Inc. joined the nation-wide reading initiative Jumpstart’s Reading Recording ... recruited twenty– four volunteers to read to over 1200 pre –k and kindergarten students in the Gary Community School Corporation. With the support of Gary Educational Development Foundation, each kindergarten student received their very own copy of “Quackers” to take home.

<p style="text-align:center;">“Straight Outta Gary” ... Gary’s own, Chester Gregory was the special guest in 2016 as we celebrated 15 years of service to Gary and surrounding regions, at GLC’s annual Philanthropic Thrust Dinner Theater.</p>
