About Us

Building a Reading City, one neighbor at a time

The Gary Literacy Coalition brings people, programs, and partners together so that literacy is within reach for everyone in our community.

Mission & Vision

Our Mission

"The Gary Literacy Coalition, Inc. supports, promotes, enhances, and coordinates the accessibility of literacy opportunities, thus making Gary, 'A Reading City.'"

Our Vision

"Gary, Indiana will become a literate community known as a 'Reading City' with every individual having access to literacy opportunities."

A Reading City

"A Reading City" is more than a slogan — it's a promise that every child, adult, and senior in Gary can find the books, classes, and encouragement they need to read, learn, and thrive.

Our Focus

Four Areas of Focus

Awareness

Create awareness of the importance of literacy to health, economic development, and family well-being across our community.

Connect

Connect learners and volunteers with the programs and services that fit their needs and goals.

Support

Support and provide programs and instructional materials that improve literacy at every age.

Resources

Secure the resources needed to develop, support, and expand literacy programs throughout Gary.

Our History

For years, the Gary Literacy Coalition has served as a hub for literacy across our city — gathering educators, volunteers, families, and partners around a shared belief: that reading changes lives. From book drives to mentoring, from classroom support to community celebrations, we've connected thousands of neighbors to opportunities to grow.

We honor the work that came before us and look ahead — building on Gary's strength and resilience to make "A Reading City" a reality for the next generation.

The Need in Our Community

Why Literacy Work Matters in Gary

Gary families face real barriers to literacy access — from limited library hours to adults juggling work and family while strengthening their own reading. The Gary Literacy Coalition was built to bridge that gap, connecting neighbors to books, tutoring, and programs at every age.

Children & Families

Early reading skills shape a child's entire future.

Adult Learners

Millions of adults seek to strengthen their reading and writing skills every year.

Older Adults & Digital Access

Technology has made digital literacy essential for health, finances, and daily life.
