GLC "Learning Partner" Mentoring Project
“Learning Partners” Gender Academy Mentoring Project- The Gary Literacy Coalition sponsors an elementary school-based mentoring program. Mentors called “Learning Partners” are matched with selected students. Mentors visit their mentees during the school day at least twice per month encouraging excellence in academics and behavior. The U-Read literacy component of this project engages mentors and mentees in reading selected books and participating in large group book discussions each month. Special activities are planned to broaden the experiences of the students. Some examples of these activities are Barber Shop Days, Spa Days, Anti-Bullying Sessions with a Magician, Community Leader Presentations, Brandon Moore Day (NFL Football Player) as well as special incentives for students. “Learning Partners” provide additional support to students and teachers.
